PLIOGRIP S 1021 (3%) COBALT (ACCELERATOR) AND PLIOGRIP (8%) S-1022 PROMOTER

  * GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Cobalt is the most active drier because it activates drying of the film by oxidation. For good thorough drying, cobalt is used in combination with Cobalt Octoate is also used as accelerator in polymerization of unsaturated polyester resins.

ACCELERATOR / PROMOTERS:

These are the materials which when used in conjuction with an organic peroxide catalyst, increase tl rate of peroxide break down to liberate free radicals. Thus, these acceleratiors cure the polyester resin a controlled manner. They are mainly used to enable the otherwise unsuitable peroxide to be used curepolyester resin at ambient temperature. The accelerators can be classified into two classes.

 COBALT ACCELERATOR:

These are based on cobalt naphthenate or octoate solutions which are available with the cob, concentration ranging from 1-12%. Generally 3% cobalt solutions are available in the market and for tIaccelerator concentration the recommended dosage is 1-2% of the weight of the resin.

TERTIARY AMINE:

Generally N N' dimethyl aniline is used as accelerator to accelerate the catalyst benzoyl peroxide to gi' cure at room temperature, ego curing of polyester metal paste. N N' dimethyl aniline is also used as co-accelerator in cobalt accelerated system, ego curing of Bisphenol resin. N N' dimethyl aniline (10 solution in styrene) is normally used here, with the recommended dosage being 1-2% of the resin weight

All accelerators are recommended to be kept away from peroxide catalyst, as they form high explosive mixtures.

MEDIUM TEMPERATURE CURE:

This method is followed in the case of continuous laminating filament winding process, where during tI process a temperature of 50° - 60° C is maintained. In the case of such application catalyst MEKP is USE along with accelerator. The temperature of 50°-60° C accelerates the rate of curing cycle which is one of the important factors avoid warpage; also ensures the maximum extent of curing.

 HIGH TEMPERATURE CURE:

Catalysts like Benzoyl peroxide, Dibutyl per benzoate (DBPB) etc. are being used· for high temperatu (100°-160° C) cure system, where there is no need of accelerator or promoter. The dissociation peroxide takes place at elevated temperature. The shelf life of catalysed resin at ambient temperature 6-7 days and it can be extended further by storing at low temperature. This process is used in the case SMC/DMC application. Since the process is carried out at high temperature, the rate of production is ve high. Each component may require 3-5 minutes and the product which comes out of the mould is complete cured.

FRP composite - which is a composition of seve.ral factors like resin, reinforcing material (glass), accelerate catalyst, ambient conditions and finally very important is the moulding techniques used. Under sue conditions moulder/processor has to take all precautions to achieve zero level rejection.

Whenever there is any special resin requirement - when new specifications are spelt out for a speci application, it is advisable to discuss the details with the resin manufacturer - the development possible by good interaction and co-ordination between resin manufacturer and user.

Caution:

Pliogrip Q 8013 MEKP should never be mixed with Pliogrip S 1021 Cobalt, as this would cause explosion. The Pliogrip S 1021 Cobalt should be blended into the resin first. The Pliogrip Q 8013 MEKP should be added just before use.

 CATALYST:

Catalyst or initiators for unsaturated polyester resin systems consist of organic peroxides. Unsaturated polyester resins will, given enough time, eventually set themselves. This rate of polymerisation reaction is too slow and will not reach desirable state of cure. In oder to get desirable cure in a give time, catalyst is used. There are variety of catalysts available for polyester crosslinking. The selection of catalyst depends upon the cure process techniques used and they are briefly classified as follows:

AMBIENT TEMPERATURE CURE:

The hand lay-up technique needs catalyst which initiates the polymerisation reaction at ambient temperature. Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide is a commonly used catalyst along with suitable accelerator for such applications.

MEK Peroxide is very explosive in its pure form and therefore it is always supplied after diluting with a plasticiser such as Dibutylphthalate. The MEKP initiates the polymerisation reaction of unsaturated polyester resin in presence of an accelerator such as Cobalt Octoate or Napthenate. The normal recommended usage is 1-2% of the resin weight for Laminates, and 2-3% for Gelcoats.

Storage :

It is recommended to store below 25° C in a free ventilated room. It should be kept away from accelerator. Avoid remixing of unused catalyst to the original container.

 Caution:

Pliogrip Q 8013 should never be mixed with Pliogrip S 1021, as this would cause explosion. The Pliogrip S 1021 should be blended into the resin first. The Pliogrip Q 8013 should be added just before use.
